Fishing Tips from Rick Clunn
Rick Clunn is the only four-time winner of the BASS Masters Classic (1976, 1977, 1984,
1990). He is a two-time winner of the prestigious U.S. Open (1983, 1986), and captured the
1985 Red Man All-American title. Clunn owns 12 career B.A.S.S. victories and has qualified
for the BASS Masters Classic a record 22 consecutive years.
Tip 1
One of the most productive tactics with visible hydrilla lines is targeting any unusual feature along the weed edge. The same
tried-and-true tactic applies to submerged hydrilla. Experienced fishermen carefully study the depthfinder report of their trolling
motor-mounted transducer for sign of any point, ragged cut or pocket on an otherwise well-defined edge. Another edge hot spot
can be where the depth changes slightly. You will fish miles and miles of hydrilla flats and, for some reason, some places on the
edge will be deeper. It may only be deeper for a few yards, but that is where the fish always are.
Tip 2
Line size plays a very important role in the depth you obtain with a crankbait. You will get more depth with lighter line, because the
smaller the diameter, the less friction is created as it comes through the water. The heavier the line, the more resistance because
there's more friction. Another problem created by using heavier line with crankbaits is the possibility of altering that all important
vibration pattern. The diameter of heavier line can change the vibration pattern of a crankbait. The smaller the lure, the more
critical the problem becomes both in terms of depth and vibration. Larger luresdo not present that much of a problem.
